UP’s first women’s uni. to be named after Hazrat Mahal

Lucknow: UP’s Samajwadi Party government, in deference to the wishes and demands of Lucknow’s many social workers, educationists and many other people to recognise the valiant role played by Avadh’s last queen and wife of Nawab Wajid Ali Shah, Begum Hazrat Mahal in the first war of independence of 1857 against British rule, has decided to set up the first women’s university of UP in Lucknow and name it after her. According to the government spokesman the valiant role played by Begum Hazrat Mahal in the rebellion of 1857 cannot be forgotten. In this University, women-centric courses will be taught and promoted. Also, such courses will be introduced and taught in this university through which women may be able to get employment. The spokesman said that women’s university’s campus will be wi-fi and will be equipped with a library and other facilities. In this Univeristy, for appointment of faculties women will be given preference and maximum number of Chairs will be set up for research. It may be stated incidentally that in the first war of independence of 1857 Begum Hazrat Mahal had fought valiantly against the British. After Nawab Wajid Ali Shah was dethroned and exiled to Calcutta, she took control of the affairs of Avadh and in the war against the British, she had captured Avadh.
