Documentary film on Begum Hazrat Mahal

Lucknow: A short documentary film, about half an hour long, on Begum Hazrat Mahal, one of the wives of Nawab Wajid Ali Shah and the last queen of Avadh has been made by the films division of govt of India which is directed by Mohiuddin Mirza, who is a national award winner. This documentary was screened in Lucknow on May 30, her 137th death anniversary. The documentary depicts her as one of the first women revolutionary leaders in India’s struggle for independence. She had valiantly fought against the British government in India in the first war of independence in 1857. Though she had recaptured Avadh from the British forces at that time, the war or the rebellion on the whole was brutally crushed. The ruler of Avadh, Nawab Wajid Ali Shah, her husband was dethroned and exiled to Calcutta. After the failure of the war of indepdence she sought asylum in Nepal and died there in 1879.
