Chargesheets filed against Anzar Shah and Abdus Sami

Mumbai / New Delhi: NIA has filed a charge sheet against 5 persons including the noted religious scholar Maulana Anzar Shah Qasmi and Maulana Abdus Sami’ before Patiala House (New Delhi)’s Additional Sessons Judge Reetesh Singh on 10 June, according to Gulzar Ahmad Azmi, secretary of Jamiatul Ulama, Maharashtra’s Legal Assistance Committee. He (Azmi) said that lawyers, Advocates M. S. Khan and S. R. M. Naved, pleaders on behalf of Legal Assistance Committee of Maharashtra’s Jamiatul Ulama (Arshad Madni) have got copies of the charge sheet to study and they are planning to file a fresh application for their release on bail. It may be stated in this connection that NIA had arrested (in addition to Maulana Anzar Shah and Maulana Abdus Sami’, three others, who are Muhammad Asif, Zafar Mahmood and Abdul Rahman) for working for Al Qaeda and for popularising Al Qaeda’s ideology. So far, charge sheets against a total of 17 persons have been filed of whom 12 are absconding and police is searching for them. It may be stated that Anzar Shah was arrested on 6 January in Mangalore and Abdul Sami was arrested on 18 January from Nuh. Muhammad Asif was arrested from Delhi’s Seelampur locality He is considered to be one of the founder members of AQIS (Al Qaeda in Indian Subcontinent) and head in India of AQIS’s recruitment and training wing. Abdul Rahman was arrested in Cuttack (Orissa) and Zafar Masood was arrested in Sambhal (UP)’s Deepa Sarai locality on charges of collecting money for Al Qaeda. They were arrested under UAPA (Unlawful Activities (Prevention) Act.
