J&K not an integral part of India: MLA

Srinagar: Independent MLA of Jammu & Kashmir, Er. Sheikh Rashid said in the state assembly on 20 June that the state i.e. J&K is not an integral part of India and called for a referendum to decide the future of the state. He said that even if I am hanged I will say that Jammu & Kashmir is neither an  integral part of India nor Pakistan’s jugular vein. He further said “even if you send me to jail, debar me from contesting elections or hang me, it will not force me to change my stand on Kashmir, adding, we have sacrificed about one lakh lives and cannot compromise on right to self-determination”. He said that he was not against India’s sovereignty but was talking only about Jammu & Kashmir which has become a bone of contention between India and Pakistan and this Assembly has no authority to overrule the UN Resolution. Rashid, or Rasheed as some newspapers have written, who is an MLA from Handwara has made some controversial statements earlier also and has launched his own party, Awami Ittehad Party. Last year he held a beef party in the MLA Hostel in Srinagar, creating a tense situation. BJP, which is a partner in the PDP-BJP coalition government reacting to his statements that J&K is not an integral part of India, said that he should resign from the Assembly, join hand with separatists or should go to Pakistan.
