Babri Masjid demolished because of Narasimha Rao’s Hindutva thinking

New Delhi: Vice President of India, who is the Chairman of Rajya Sabha M. Hamid Ansari while describing (late) prime minister Narasimha Rao as fully responsible for the demolition of Babri Masjid, said that this had happened because of his Hindutva thinking. He said these words while releasing a book titled Half Line by Vinay Satyapati in Delhi on 28 June. He also said that whereas he (Rao) did many good things for the country which are still going on at the same time the damages caused by his policy also are going on and the country and people are still paying a huge price of this (He did not specify what price and in what way the country is paying a heavy price because of his flawed policy).

It may be stated about this book, Half Line that its author Vinay Satyapti has tried to defend Rao and his role and policies and reject the accusations of many that he deliberately did not take any steps to prevent its demolition. He has also accused Congressmen of being indifference towards Rao and in order to garner Muslim sympathy, support and votes, they put all the blame on Rao. After the release of this book Satyapati said in a discussion that followed, that Rao’s role in anti-Sikh riots (of 1984) was very serious. At that time he (Rao) was union home minister and directly responsible for taking action (to prevent these riots). Satyapati said that after demolition of Babri Masjid, efforts were also made to ‘finish’ Rao. In this discussion, in addition to Satyapati and Ansari, some others like former foreign minister Natwar Singh, senior journalist Shekhar Gupta, columnist and foreign policy analyst C. Raja Mohan also took part. Satyapati also said that Rao wanted to protect the Babri Masjid but at the same time also wanted to safeguard Hindu sentiments and wanted to clear himself of any blame but in any case the Masjid was demolished. Hindus deserted the Congress and Rao’s own honour also was destroyed.

(It may also be recalled that as regards Rao’s role in the demolition of Babri Masjid, L. K. Advani who as BJP member was in the opposition but during the months and days preceding the demolition of Babri Masjid he was frequently meeting Rao. Why was he frequently meeting Rao and what both of them were discussing is not made public but Advani as BJP representative might seriously have been discussing ways and means of demolishing Babri Masjid. If Rao really wanted to protect the Babri Masjid, after knowing Advani’s strategy and intention of demolishing the Masjid he would not have held any further meeting with him but this is a fact that Advani continued to meet him (Rao) several times who was a willing partner in the demolition of Babri Masjid.)

Bringing the discussion to an end, Hamid Ansari said that on the whole it can be said that the good work done by Rao is still going on after his death but the damages caused by his flawed policy too are continuing. He praised Rao’s role in initiating changes in economic policy. It may be stated that Rao partly introduced privatization of Indian economic policy and globalisation.
