Presidential Award winners
On the occasion of Indian Independence Day 15 August 2016 Presidential Awards to prominent scholars of ‘classical’ languages i.e. Sanskrit, Pali, Prakrit, Arabic and Persian were announced. According to a Rashtrapati Bhavan press release, 15 Sanskrit scholars were honoured with Presidential Awards and Maharshi Badrayan Vyas Samman. Arabic and Persian scholars who were honoured with Presidential Awards 2016 are ABDUL MUSAWWIR BHOJIA, SYED ASAD HUSAINI, BADAR JAMAL ISLAHI, SYED G. MEHDI ‘Raaz’, CHAUDHARI WAHHAJ AHMAD ASHRAF and MOLVI H. RAHMAN KABULI. Those Arabic and Persian scholars who were honoured with Maharshi Badrayan Vyas Samman are Dr. MUHAMMAD QUTUBUDDIN and Dr. HUSAINUZZAMAAN.
This year (2016)’s World Urdu Day Awards have been announced, according to which, for Allama Iqbal Award for the best researcher, (late) Prof. JAGANNATH AZAD poet has been selected posthumously. GHULAM MUHAMMAD ISMAIL VASTANVI, Rector of Jamia Islamia Esha’tul Uloom, Akal Kua (Maharashtra) has been selected for being honoured with World Urdu Day Sir Sayyad Ahmad Khan Award for educational, milli and national services, Dr. MUHAMMAD ABUL FAIZ (Tonk, Rajasthan) has been selected for being honoured with Molvi Abdul Haq World Urdu Day Award for educational services, Dr. MAJID DEOBANDI has been selected for Hafeez Meeruthi World Urdu Day Award for poetry and literature, SYED ASAD RAZA has ben selected for being honoured with Saghar Khayyami World Urdu Day Award for humour and satire, MUHAMMAD AAMIR SALEEM KHAN BASTAWI has been selected for being honoured with Mahfoozur Rahman World Urdu Day Award for journalism, Dr. MUHAMMAD ARSHAD of Nagina (Bijnor) has been selected for being honoured with Qazi Adeel Abbasi World Urdu Day Award for promotion of Urdu language,SHEIKH ASRARUL HAQ has been selected for being honoured with Maulana Abdul Waheed Siddiqi World Urdu Day Award for weekly journalism. And finally, PHAROS MEDIA & PUBLISHING (P) Ltd, New Delhi has been selected for being honoured with Munshi Nawal Kishore World Urdu Day Award for publication. Head of this institution (Publishing House) is Dr. Zafarul-Islam Khan. According to World Urdu Day Management Committee’s convener, Dr. Sayyad Ahmad Khan, a decision has also been taken to honour this year Dr. LAL BAHADUR MAURYA with Mohsin-e Urdu title. He (Dr. Maurya) had contested Parliamentary election from Ambedkar Nagar district’s Akbarpur constituency (UP) in 2004 and is the first Indian who had filed his nomination paper in Urdu. He has also been working for the past many decades to provide Urdu its constitutional and legal right. It may also be stated that World Urdu Day is observed all over the world every year on 9 November, birth day of Dr. Allama Muhammad Iqbal.
(West) Bengal’s Urdu Academy has honoured many journalists and men of letters not only of Bengal but also those who belong to other states. Among those selected for award are SHAHNAWAZ QURESHI of Lucknow’s Sahafat, Prof. SIDDIQUR RAHMAN QIDWAI, AHMAD SAYEED SAYEED MAHIHABADI, Bengal’s noted journalist, author and Rajya Sabha MP and WASIMUL HAQ, noted journalist. All these people were given a cheque of Rs. 70 thousand, memento and certificate each. In addition to these, those selected for being honoured for literature and journalism at state level are AFAQ MIRZA,Dr. DABIR AHMAD and for research services are Prof. ABDUL MANNAN of Kolkata University’s former President of Deptt of Urdu, Dr. MA’SOOM SHARQI, Dr. SHANTI RANJAN BHATTACHARYA. All these people were awarded Rs. 35 thousand, memento and certificate each. The cash and other awards, certificates etc were given to them at a function held in Kolkata University’s Auditorium on 20 August.
Inspector GHULAM NABI BHAT of Central Reserve Police Force (CRPF) along with SIPAHI MUHAMMAD ASIF and SIPAHI MUKHTAR AHMAD KHAN of CRPF are among the 44 members of CRPF who were honoured with President’s Police Medal for Gallantry on 14 August 2016. In addition to these, Shaheed Muhammad Nihal Alam, Deupty Commandant (CRPF) is among the 9 CRPF jawans whose names were announced for police Medal for gallantry posthumously on 14 August 2016.
