J&K: Over 570 arrested, PSA slapped on 109

In a large-scale crackdown on people thought to be behind the current unrest in Kashmir, 109 persons have been arrested under PSA and sent to various jails inside the state and outside. The office of Jamaat-e Islami Jammu & Kashmir was raided in the morning of 31st Augsut; its spokesman and head of the political section Adv. Zahid Ali was arrested. Four youth of Tangmarg have been dispatched to Kotbalwal prison in Jammu. During the last five weeks, 570 persons have been arrested during night raids. They include youth and separatist leaders from south, central and north Kashmir. Most of them are accused of stone-pelting and PSA has been invoked against some of them while some were let off after brief detention. One of the arrestees is Dr. Ghulam Muhammad Hubbi, a senior separatist leader. PSA was invoked against him before he was sent to Kotbalwal prison.
