Jamia Millia to start MD and PhD courses in Unanipathy

New Delhi: Jamia Millia Islamia (JMI) University will soon introduce PhD and MD (Doctor of Medicine) courses. A Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) to this effect was signed between Hyderabad-based CCRUM (Central Council for Research in Unani Medicines) which is working under the union ministry of Ayush and Jamia Millia Islamia, on 24 August ‘16 in the presence of JMI-VC Prof. Talat Ahmad and CCRUM’s Director-General Prof. Raeesur Rahman and many others, to start PhD and MD courses in JMI from the current academic session itself. Under this MoU, CCRUM will provide, through Central Research Institute of Unani Medicines, all facilities in respect of infrastructure such as hospitals, laboratories etc to JMI to run the courses. JMI will conduct an entrance examination and interview for these courses, particularly for PhD course, in accordance with the rules and regulations of Central Council of Indian Medicines and JMI. Jamia VC Prof. Talat Ahmad, speaking on this occasion said that starting these courses by CCRUM in JMI will add a new chapter in Unani Tibb which will make revolutionary progress in coming years. He however emphasised the point that the traditional and old system (of Unani Tibb) needs to be modernised with the help of advanced sciences. He also said that Jamia proposes to set up a Faculty in which Allopathy, Unani and Homeopathy colleges will be included.

In yet another development which is a matter of pride as far as JMI is concerned, it has become the first University in Delhi to be granted Community College status by UGC under the Deen dayal Upadhya Kaushal Kendra (DDUKK) scheme of the central government. Under this scheme, JMI will start and offer four different vocational courses to its students. These are: BA Vocational Course in medical laboratory sciences, BA Vocational Course in medical electro-pysiology, BA Vocational course in solar energy, and Diploma in refrigeration and air-conditioning. These courses are, in fact, already being run in Jamia University, the first two at the Physio-therapy Department, the third one at the Physics Department and the fourth one i.e. Diploma in refrigeration and air-conditioning at the University Polytechnic. The DDU-KK Community College status has been awarded under the central government's skill development and training centre scheme for the empowerment of students / youth through jobs and employment. For this purpose two new highly developed laboratories of DDUKK have been set up in Jamia Millia University recently.
