Rejoinders / Letters to the Editor

Sultan Akhtar Patel

Here was a person engaged selflessly in addressing Muslim issues worldover by tirelessly writing in English, Urdu and Gujarati until his last days. He is no more. Muslim Gujarat has lost such a gem of personality in Sultan Akhtar Patel some time back. He was a great friend of The Milli Gazette and an avid letter writer. His letters are replete on letter pages on a plethora of issues touching the Muslim community in India and abroad. He was in employment with Mumbai Municipal Corporation until his retirement. Keeping apart his office responsibilities and commuting between Churchgate to Bassein (Vasai Road), Mr. Patel kept on working for different Muslim periodicals, having affiliations with many Islamic institutes beyond national shores. He was the first member of Jamat-e-Islami Hind from Gujarat and was greatly impressed with Maulana Maudoodi’s literature. He had never sought any help as a ‘lone walker’ and devoted all his time to writing and translating on various Islamic issues. He had three brothers. They were all in government jobs. Two brothers and Mr. Patel’s wife predeceased him. Sultan being the eldest has left behind his brother who is second in chain and spending his retirement days at his residence in Amod, Dist. Bharuch, Gujarat after serving in a senior position in the Revenue Department. Mr. Patel too was resting in his ancestral village (Khanpur Deh), Taluka Jambusar, Dist. Bharuch after retiring from his job in Mumbai Municipal Corporation. Later he moved to Amod with his brother after his wife’s demise where he finally passed away. Besides, his unflinching love for Milli Gazette can never be forgotten to an extent that there had hardly been any Milli Gazette issue without his bold comments or letter to the editor on burning Muslim concerns. During his last days, he developed some health complications and in the process of treatment, breathed his last. May his soul enter in the highest quarters of paradise. (By Sultan Akhtar Patel, his maternal brother having the same name)
