Summons issued against AMU-VC, PVC and some teachers

Aligarh: After Presidnet Pranab Mukherjee’s approval for initiating enquiries against AMU-VC Zamiruddin Shah into allegations of financial and administrative irregularities in this University, Aligarh’s District and Session Judge’s Court has odered that notices / summons may be issued to VC Zamiruddin Shah, Pro VC Brig. S. Ahmad Ali, two Deputy Registrars and many teachers of AMU and Schools run under this university. It may be stated in this connection that union HRD ministry had earlier sent a file to the President seeking an enquiry into financial, administrative and academic irregularities against the VC and some after authorities of the University. Some of the charges against the VC are: illegal transfer of funds collected from the students from the university account to the account of a private trust named ‘Sir Syed Educational Foundation’, appointment of a retired brigadier as AMU Pro Vice Chanellor in spite of UGC directive that this position (Pro-VC) should be held by a professor, (VC Zamiruddin Shah says that he had appointed him (Brig Ali) by invoking his emergency powers), appointment of ineligible candidates like assistant professors to fill up vacant posts of professors and associate professors, deteriorating law and order in the university campus, etc. In the District and Sesison Judge’s (DSJ) court, advocate Ashok Kumar told the court that permission by UP governor and finally, of the President has already been given for conducting an inquiry and legal proceedings against the accused persons.
The DSJ issued notices / summons to AMU-VC Zamiruddin Shah, Pro-VC S. Ahmad Ali, Dy Registrars Arifuddin Ahmad and Dr. Salik Siddiqi, Prof. Rashid Shaaz of the Deptt of English, Prof. Abul Kalam Qasmi and Prof. Khurshid Ahmad of Urdu Deptt, Prof. (Ms) Naheed Jabeen and (Ms) Tanveer Jahan of AMU Girls High School, Ms. Saba, teacher of Minto Circle (AMU), Ms. Niaz Fatema Naseem, teacher of AMU City High School, and so on. In the notice these people i.e. VC, Pro-VC and teachers and proessors have been asked to appear in court on 22 November.
It may also be stated in this connection that some members of an organisation called Nyay Sangathan, particularly its president Sardar Mukesh Saini, advocate had been trying and demanding for the past many years that legal action against University authorities may be taken in public interest. Sangathan’s vice president Chaudhary Ifrahim Husain said that information about fake appointments in this University had been obtained under RTI. Zamiruddin Shah, earlier had sent a leter to the President saying that attempts were being made by his detractors and opponents, particularly Wasim Ahmad, a former member of AMU Executive Council and former Rajya Sabha MP to implicate him (Zamiruddin Shah) in deceit acts and corruption cases and that a vilification campaign is being made against him.
Incidentally, it may be stated that AMU VC is the seventh VC of many Indian universities, including central universities to be treated in this manner and inquiries were ordered ever since the present BJP-led government took over the reins of the country in 2014. Others before him were, and are, the VC of Vishva Bharti University, (earlier named Shanti Niketan started by Rabindra Nath Tagore) (who was sacked by former HRD minister Smriti Irani), VCs of Pondicherry University, of IGNOU, Delhi University, Jamia Millia Islamia University and Allahabad University.
