Tokyo Uni. Urdu Professor’s programme in Ghalib Institute

New Delhi: A special programme of Tokyo University’s Urdu Department’s Professor Yutaka Asada was held in Ghalib Institute, Delhi on 15 November which was chaired by Prof. Siddiqur Rahman Qidwai. Prof. Yutaka Asada in his lecture spoke in detail on Japan’s great poet Santoka’s life and poetic works. In his lecture Prof. Yutaka also recited Santoka’s couplets and their translation in Urdu. He said that Santoka was an eminent poet of Japan whose poetry contained revolutionary hues in addition to philosophic and social elements and whose poetry greatly influenced his age. He (Prof. Yutaka) also spoke on Santoka’s poetic style. Prof. Siddiqur Rahman Qidwai in his presidential speech said that after hearing Prof. Yutaka’s speech we were greatly pleased to hear and know about Japan’s famous poet and his poetry with which we were so far unfamiliar. He furhter said that from today’s speech of Prof. Yutaka we not only came to know about Santoka’s life and poetry but about Japan’s culture and civilisation also. Dr. Raza Haidar, while introducing Prof. Yutaka said that he has played an important role in popularising Urdu language and literature in Japan and has translated short stories and works of fiction by Manto, Ismat Chughtai, Krishn Chandar and many other fiction writers into Japanese language. His (Yutaka’s) famous drama Hiroshima ki Kahani was liked very much in India and was also staged many times in different cities. At the end there was question and answer session when many among the audience put many questions to him to which Prof. Yutaka answered satisfactorily.
