“Firing after Mecca Masjid blast justified”

Justice V Bhaskar Rao Commission inquiring into the police firing in Hyderabad after the Mecca Masjid blast has justified the firing by saying that the police opened fire to prevent violence escalating further. The panel’s report has been accepted by the Andhra Pradesh Cabinet. Muslim leaders have strongly opposed the report of the panel for they believe that police had resorted to unprovoked and unwarranted firing. However, the state government has agreed to all the recommendations made by the Commission in order to prevent any such incident in the future. The suggestion includes installation of CCTV cameras in an around every important religious structure and at the same time increased security measures in these places, including Mecca Masjid. Shafeequrrahman Mohajir, who had represented the Muslim side before the commission said that the Commission’s report is meant to protect the guilty and a cover up of the government and police failure in the incident. In yet another important step the Andhra Pradesh cabinet has decided to extend the 4 percent reservation for the economically backward section from the Muslim community for ten years.
