“Forbesganj firing is a clear sign of Nitish govt’s anti-Muslim policies”: Maulana Qasmi

New Delhi (20 June 2011): “Bihar Police’s barbaric firing and killing of Muslims in Bhajanpur area of Araria district has proved that Bihar’s NDA government has no sympathy for Muslims,” said the well-known Muslim leader and member of Parliament from Kishanganj, Maulana Asrarul Haq Qasmi in a press statement here. He said that Bihar Police fired even at a 6-month-old infant, which shows the anti-people mentality of this force and indicates forces behind this bestiality. Maulana Qasmi said that it was necessary for the authorities to convince the local people before closing down a road being used for the past six decades.

Maulana Qasmi expressed his surprise that even now the criminal police personnel have not been punished. He said that if Nitish government has any room for humanity, it should forthwith sack the deputy chief minister Sushil Kumar Modi and BJP MLC Ashok Agrawal. He said that it is strange that the state government is maintaining silence over such a serious incident and has refrained from taking any tough action against the culprits. He said that the state government’s silence indicates the seriousness of the matter and involvement of its officers at higher levels.

Maulana Qasmi has written a letter to the Bihar Chief Minster Nitish Kumar expressing his anger at the police brutality and demanding early action against them. He demanded the sacking of the policemen involved and their trial for murder. He said that he will start a popular movement for justice if the victims were denied quick justice.

Maulana Qasmi had earlier explained the details of the police bestiality at Bhajanpur to UPA Chairperson Sonia Gandhi and offered her press clippings on the matter. He has also written in this respect to the Prime Minister Dr Manmohan Singh and Home Minister Mr P Chidambram.

Maulana Qasmi has demanded in his letter to the Bihar Chief Minister that the next of kin of each person killed in Bhajanpur must be paid at least Rs ten lakh as ex gratia and each injured must be paid a compensation of Rs One lakh at least. Moreover, the injured must be treated at the expense of the state. He said that information reaching him says that the injured are not being properly cared for and they are not getting proper treatment.
