No restriction on Muslims practising Yoga

New Delhi: Maulana Umair Ilyasi, president of All India Masjid Imams Organisation said in a statement at Delhi that there are misconceptions among Muslims about Yoga that it is not for Muslims. He rejected the views by some Muslim countries about Yoga due to the use of the word ‘Om’ in some of its exercises. Arguing that God has different names, and in the same way Yoga can be practised and taught even in mosques. He said that Yoga is good for all. Ilyasi, whose organisation claims to have a membership of about half-a-million Imams said that when religious leaders are involved in a mission, the message goes to the community faster. Irrespective of what he says many Muslims and religious leaders do not favour practisingYoga by Muslims. Some Muslim countries like Malaysia, Indonesia etc prohibit Muslims from practising Yoga, on the ground that elements of Hinduism in Yoga exercises may corrupt them.
