Police in MP claims security angle behind Christian profiling

Bhopal: The Madhya Pradesh police have claimed that the need for profiling of Christians, arose from the community’s own sense of insecurity. Madhya Pradesh police had issued a circular on 23 March to all police stations, instructing them to prepare a detailed report of the Christians. The survey was to be carried out to find out the total number of Christians, their involvement in crimes, political affiliation and the source of fundings, their institutions and the likes. The circular had triggered alarm bells in the community. The state government in its investigation did not found anyone guilty but has warned the local authority that issued the circular not to repeat it in future without consulting senior officers. Archbishop of Bhopal Leo Cornelio and spokesman of Catholic Church Fr Anand Muttungal have dismissed the findings of the investigation conducted by the state government. Archbishop Leo Cornelio of Bhopal has said the probe has not answered the basic questions. The state’s intelligence department, which conducted the investigation into the profiling said that it was due to a misunderstanding between officials in the police department.
