Mrs ANISA SAYYAD and IMRAN HASAN KHAN are the two Muslim sportspersons who won gold medals in the Commonwealth Games held last month in Delhi. Whereas Anisa won two gold medals, one in 25 metres air pistol and the other in 25 metres (pairs), Imran Hasan Khan won gold medal in 50 metres rifle shooting. SANIA MIRZA had to be content with a silver.
J&K’s separatist leader SYED ALI SHAH GILANI has been elected Chairman of Hurriyat Conference (G) for the third time for three years. According to Hurriyat Conference spokesman Ayaz Akbar, after the formation of Hurriyat Conference (G) in 2004, this is for the third time that he has been unanimously elected Chairman of this Conference. He said that there was a proposal to make him Hurriyat Conference’s Chairman for life but he rejected this proposal and said that according to HC’s Constitution, Chairman’s election should be after every three years.
Dr ME’RAJUDDIN AHMAD, a former minister of UP and a Muslim leader, has been appointed a member of All India Congress Committee by Congress Party’s Chairperson Sonia Gandhi.
Dr SANAULLAH, Reader in AMU’s Department of Arabic has been invited as a special speaker on ‘Muslim Culture and Civilization’ in the International Congress of Volga and Ural Region of Russia sponsored jointly by IRCICA, Istanbul and Bash State University. Dr Sanaullah presented his research treatise on ‘Indo-Turkish Trajectory of Naqshbandi Sufism’ in Volga-Ural Region’ (of Russia).
Dr ABDUL WAHEED KHAN, former Vice-Chancellor of Indira Gandhi National Open University (IGNOU) has been conferred the honorary degree of Doctor of Letters (Honoris Causa) by Wawason Open University, Penang (Malaysia) in recognition of Dr Khan as a visionary, leader, educationist and achiever in education, particularly in distance education. Dr Khan presently is senior adviser to Arab Open University.
HAFIZ NADEEM SIDDIQI has been unanimously elected President of Jamiatul Ulama, Maharashtra Branch for a period of two years at a meeting of Jamiatul Ulama, Maharashtra’s newly elected management committee held at Aurangabad on 11 October.
Lt. Gen. SYED ATA HASNAIN, senior-most Muslim army officer who is presently the Commander of 21st Army Corps at Sagar (MP) is likely to be appointed Commander of 15th Army Corps in Kashmir Valley, whose Headquarters are in Srinagar, by the end of this year when the existing Commander of 15th Army Corps, Lt. Gen. N.C. Marwah will be transferred.
Ms NAJMA PARVEEN KARIMI, a senior teacher of Karimia School, an old school of Old Delhi of historical importance, has been appointed its Principal. JAWED AKHTAR, noted Urdu poet and film lyricist, has translated the national song Vande Mataram (which is in Bengali) into Hindi for film director, Ashutosh Gowariker’s forthcoming film Khelein hum ji jaan say. He said that he translated the song in Hindi because all actors in this film being Bengalis, if he translated it in chaste Urdu, it would appear rather unnatural and false because it would be easier for them to speak and sing in Hindi rather than in chaste and refined Urdu.
