In a move that doesn’t speak well of Jamia Millia Islamia (JMI), as a place of learning, the authorities, according to Firoz Bakht Ahmed, community worker and chairman of Friends for Education, have quite unceremoniously and in a dictatorial one-sided diktat removed Prof PK Basu of Centre for Management Studies (CMS). Bakht was talking to some scribes.

According to Bakht, Prof Basu who had been teaching there without taking a single penny on a philanthropic basis, is an academician of proven acumen and credentials and had taught in many Western universities. According to his former students, Prof Basu has to his credit immense experience and was one of the best in the teaching faculty. In fact, it’s not as big a loss of Prof Basu as it’s of the Jamia students.

Bakht was also critical of a similar unfortunate incident where Dr Shrinivas Ramchandra Siras, reader and chairman of Modern Indian Languages at AMU, Aligarh who on charges of consensual sexual relations with a rickshaw puller, was also sacked hastily at the fag end of his career. The result of this was that the man committed suicide. Though unnatural and odious, homosexuality is not illegal, but invading someone’s privacy is. If anything, the heat ought to be on those who had carried out the sting operation, said an irate Bakht.

An ex-student, who spoke to Bakht and didn’t want to be named, termed Prof Basu to be impeccable and flawless and further stated that the sacking of Prof Basu was a result of smutty internal politics.

Bakht added that this was a serious issue and many people in the community haven’t liked this move by the JMI and that it is owing to such myopic and autocratic acts that the entire Muslim community gets stigmatized.

Prof Basu, not a permanent faculty at Jamia, while delivering a lecture to MBA students on September 7, allegedly passed remarks that were personal and communal, causing anguish among faculty and students. Allegedly, he referred to Jamia as being a worthless minority university. Then pointing to a girl wearing a burqa, he said all of these students are dumb heads. He said by teaching here, he was wasting his time.

Not only that Basu has been damned as an RSS plant but the JMI is reportedly proceeding to file an FIR against Prof. Basu, prosecuting him for libel. This is unfortunate.

Bakht censured the brusque and callous attempts to persecute and demonize Prof. Basu who is known for his anti-Burqa stand and what he had meant was that sometimes burqa becomes an impediment in the way of a woman who is studying or going for a job.

“Its a hazardous precedent and if the authorities take decisions under pressure of few students who are not concerned about studies, soon the entire academic structure might crash. In Basu’s case, a proper enquiry must be conducted and even if he had hurt a community, he must be sensitized to the sentiments of Muslims and must be given another chance,” Bakht added.

Earlier, The Milli Gazette editor Dr Zafarul-Islam Khan wrote the following letter to Urdu papers on 14 September which was carried by many Urdu dailies next day:

جامعہ ملیہ کے لئے ایک کالا دن

پچھلے دنوں جامعہ ملیہ میں چندگنے چنے بچوں نے ایک پروفیسر کے خلاف ہنگامہکیا اور مزید ہنگامہ کی دھمکی دی ۔ ڈین اور وی سی سے شکایت کی۔اگلے روزاردو اخبارات میں سنگین اور یک طرفہ رپورٹنگ شروع ہوئی۔ کسی نےپروفیسر(باسو) سے بات کرنے کی زحمت نہیں کی۔دوسرے دن ہی لرزہ براندام وی سینے گھٹنے ٹیک دئے۔ یوں ایک ممتاز اور سیکولر ٹیچر کو، جو جامعہ میں شوقیہاور بلا معاوضہ لکچر دے رہا تھا، ’’نکال دیاگیا‘‘۔ اس سارے معاملہ میںمذکورہ ٹیچرسے، جو بین الاقوامی حیثیت کا حامل ہے اور حکومت ہند میں ایسیمینجمنٹ پوسٹ پر فائز رہ چکا ہے جس کا عہدہ وزیر مملکت کا ہوتا ہے، کوئیبات نہیں کی گئی۔ کو ئی انکوائری نہیں ہوئی۔ اور حد تو یہ ہے کہ جس کلاس سےمتعلق واقعہ ہے غالباً کلاس کے بچوں اور بچیوں کے بیانات بھی نہیں لئے گئے۔ اردو اخبارات میں روزانہ مزید اضافے ہوتے گئے اور بالآخر یہ بھی کہہ دیاگیا کہ وہ پروفیسر آر ایس ایس کا آدمی ہے اور اس نے کلاس میں ’’گالیاں‘‘ دیں! جلدی ہی ہمارے ملی بہی خواہوں نے بھی بیانات دینے شروع کردئے اورمذکورہ ٹیچر کو نکالنے کا مطالبہ کر دیا!

یہ بات صحیح ہے کہ وہ ٹیچر برقعہ کو ناپسند کرتاہے لیکن اسکے مطابقاس نے مذکورہ کشمیری طالبہ سے صرف اتنا کہاتھاکہ کہ یہ لباس پہن کر تمفرانس نہیں جا سکتی ہو (اوکھلا ٹائمز ویبسائٹ کے مطابق)۔ مذکورہ ٹیچر مغربییونیورسٹیوں میں بھی پڑھاتا ہے، اور جامعہ میں دس سال سے اعزازی اور بلامعاوضہ لکچر دے رہا ہے۔ اس کے سابق طلبہ کے مطابق وہ نہ صرف انتہائی تجربہکار اور سیکولر آدمی ہے بلکہ ساری فیکلٹی میں اس جیسا کوئی ٹیچر نہیں ہے۔

ہماری معلومات کے مطابق دراصل یہ سارا چند ٹیچروں کا کھیل ہے جو موجودہڈین کو کسی بہانے سے ہٹانا چاہتے ہیں اوران کی شہ کی وجہ سے پروفیسر باسوکےمعاملہ کو اتنا بڑھا یا گیاکہ وہ ڈین مشکل میںپڑ جائے ۔لیکن ڈین صاحبنے بکمال چالاکی سارے معاملہ کو وی سی پر ڈال دیااور یوںایک ممتاز اورشریف ٹیچر ’’کمیونل‘‘ اور’’ آر ایس ایس‘‘ کا آدمی بن گیااور جامعہ سے نہصرف اس کو’’ نکال دیا‘‘ گیا بلکہ اس کے خلاف ایف آئی آر دائر کرنے کا بھیعندیہ دیا گیا ہے! اس کو پاگل پن کے علاوہ کیا کہا جاسکتا ہے۔ جلد ہی دسپندرہ طالب علم ہنگامہ کرکے کسی دوسرے ٹیچر بلکہ خود وی سی کے اخراج کامطالبہ کریں گے اور جامعہ میں پھر وہی حالات آجائیں گے جو پروفیسر مشیر کےپہلے دور میں تھے۔

یہاں ایک اور بات غور طلب ہے: اگر ہم ایک دو یونیورسٹیوں میں، جہاں بظاہرہماری اکثریت ہے، اس قسم کا سنگدل اور ظالمانہ برتاؤ کریں گے تو ملک کیسینکڑوں دوسری یونیورسٹیوں میں لوگ ہم سے اور بالخصوص ہمارے طلبہ سے کیابرتاؤ کریں گے؟ کیا معاشرہ میں سماجی سلامتی ،آشتیاور خیر سگالیپھیلانے کا یہی طریقہ ہے؟ پروفیسر باسو کو جامعہ کی کوئی ضرورت نہیں ہےلیکن جامعہ کے بچوں کو ان کی ضرورت ہے اور گھاٹا صرف ان بچوں کا ہوگا جوایسے ممتاز ٹیچر کی خدمات سے محروم ہوجائیں گے جو ملکی ہی نہیں بلکہ بینالاقوامی مقام رکھتاہے۔ اس قسم کے بے سر پیر احتجاج سے مخالفین کی وہ باتسچ ثابت ہوجائے گی کہ اقلیتی کردار ملنے کے بعد جامعہ ’’مدرسہ‘‘ بن جائےگا۔
