Kandhamal riots: 18 convicted

Phulbani (Orissa): Two fast track courts decided eight cases in Kandhamal riots awarding different kinds of punishments. In all 18 persons were sentenced for various terms alongwith fines. The riots cases pertain to 2007-2008 period. Fast track court - I judge S.K. Das acquitted all the 40 accused persons in four different house – burning incidents during 2008. Fast track court II judge C.R. Das convicted 18 and acquitted 24.While 10 persons were awarded rigorous imprisonment for two years and a fine of Rs 2000 each for setting afire a church in Gomakia village on 24 Dec., 2007. One person was convicted and sentenced to four years rigorous imprisonment and a fine of Rs 6500. In another case of house burning five persons were convicted and eight acquitted. The five were awarded four years of R.I. and fine of Rs 6500 each. In another case the judge found two persons guilty and acquitted 15 others.
