“Militants killed Lone & Mirwaiz Farooq”

Senior leader and former chairman of Hurriyat Conference (M), Abdul Gani Bhat on January 2 said that security forces had played no role in killings of separatist leaders Abdul Gani Lone, Mirwaiz Moulvi Muhammad Farooq and Prof. Abdul Ahad Wani.

“They were not killed by army or police. They were targeted by our own people. The story is a long one, but we’ve to tell the truth”, he said while addressing a seminar ‘Role of intellectuals in Kashmir movement’ organized here by JKLF chairman Mohammad Yasin Malik to commemorate Prof. Wani’s death anniversary. On May 21, 1990, unidentified gunmen barged into the residence of Mirwaiz Moulvi Farooq, father of Mirwaiz Umar Farooq, and assassinated him. Later, scores of people were killed when CRPF personnel fired upon his funeral procession near Islamia College. Prof. Wani who taught law at the University of Kashmir was killed on December 31, 1993 by unknown gunmen. Hurriyat Conference (M) leader and father of Hurriyat executive member Bilal Lone, Abdul Gani Lone was killed on May 21 in 2002 at a rally to mark the death anniversary of Mirwaiz Moulvi Farooq at Eidgah ground in old Srinagar city. Director General of Police (DGP) Kuldeep Khoda on January 3 said “he (Bhat) revealed what everybody knows about harsh realities of political killings by militants in Kashmir. I don’t know what is the reason for him to say this at this moment but this is the truth”, said the DGP while addressing a press conference at Jammu. He added “person involved in the killing of Mirwaiz Farooq is buried in the same graveyard where the senior Mirwaiz was laid to rest”.
