Firaq Memorial Lecture on Amir Khusro

New Delhi: Jamia Millia Islamia organised Firaq Memorial Lecture on Amir Khusro. Speaking as chief guest, eminent Urdu critic Gopi Chand Narang established him as the first person who portrayed Indian culture and civilisation in Urdu and Hindi. The programme was presided by the Vice-Chancellor Najeeb Jung. Prof. Akhtarul Wasey, head, department of Islamic Studies and Prof. Syed Muhammad Azeezuddin Husain were the guests of honour.

Prof. Narang pointed out that his inclination of writing in Hindi can be discerned in the preface of Amir Khusro’s Gharatul Kamal. There are two couplets praising Hindi and there is one couplet which can belong to both – Hindi and Persian. His other Persian works also prove evidence of his fondness for Hindi and establish him as a Hindi poet. In his presidential speech Prof. Najeeb Jung emphasised the need of co-ordinated efforts of Jamia, AMU and Maulana Azad University to popularise Urdu among the masses. Prof. Muhammad Azeezuddin felt that the preaching of the Sufi saints and their texts are our cultural heritage. Prof. Akhtarul Wasey declared him as the epitome of communal harmony and mixed culture.
