NGO seeks withdrawal of Jamia Millia Islamia admission notice

With National Commission for Minority Educational Institutions (NCMEI) yesterday clearing grant of minority status to the Jamia Millia Islamia  (a Central university),  Nawa-e-Haque, a Delhi-based NGO has written to its Vice-Chancellor seeking withdrawal of Jamia’s admission notice. The letter raises the following points:

An immediate meeting of Jamia Executive Council should be called upon so as to pass a resolution for reservation of at least 50% seats in all courses for Muslim students under provision of NCMEI.

The already issued Jamia Schools admission notice for academic session 2011-12 should immediately be withdrawn. It should be released after editing the reservation policy.

The compulsory reservation to Scheduled caste / tribe / Other Backward Classes (SC/ST/OBC) does not apply to minority institutions. Hence, it should be immediately withdrawn from the admission notices / prospectus / recruitment notices.

50% reservation for Muslims should also be ensured in Hostel admission, Students Union seats, Subject associations, recruitment, university sports teams and such other clubs / committees which gives representations of the university so that the Muslim Minorities get enough chance of expression.

University should adopt Sherwani as a dress code on special functions.
