Pigeonholing Muslim Community

TOI reported on Dec. 7 that a 33-year-old Muslim woman in the UK beat her son to death for not memorising Qur’anic verses. Just a couple of days prior to this sensational news, Pune Miror  reported that a 32-year-old Muslim woman in France named her son ‘Jihad’ (courtesy: The Daily Mail, UK).

I seriously doubt the veracity of both the news items because it reeks of flagrant hatred for a community. The entire world is suffering from ‘Islamophobia’. The western as well as Indian media are openly prejudiced against this community and they’re leaving no stone unturned to sully its image by projecting a wrong and malicious picture. Islam has become an Aunt Sally. The rest of the world has stereotyped Islam to the extent of pigeonholing and pushing it to a corner. When a community or a race is marginalised in this ignominious manner, it’s bound to bounce back with a renewed vigour and verve. The almost proverbial line: ‘Islam zinda hota hai har Karbala ke ba’d’ (Islam is reborn after every Karbala) is applicable to the cornered Muslim community all over the world.

It’ll be advisable to remember the Persian adage: Tang aamad, ba-jang aamad (Pushed to the wall, one retaliates belligerently). It’s time we learnt a lesson from history and stopped this stereotyping of Muslims as violent followers. We must ask ourselves, who are actually violent in words and deeds.
