New Delhi: Indian children’s author, Saniyasnain Khan won this year’s Sharjah Children’s Book Award for his book, The Story of Khadija. The award carries a cash prize of AED 15,000 (Rs 200,000).

UAE’s Sharjah Children’s Reading Festival has instituted a number of awards in an attempt to encourage authors and creative minds specializing in children’s literature. Ahmad bin Rakkad Al-Ameri, director of the Sharjah International Book Fair, presented the awards to the winners in a ceremony held at the recently held Book Forum of the Expo Centre, Sharjah.

Saniyasnain Khan, who hosts a weekly TV programme, “Islam For Kids”  on ETV Urdu, said, “It has always been my dream to write books for children to help them discover the good values of Islam.”

The book, The Story of Khadija (May God be pleased with her), is based on the life of the wife of the Prophet Muhammad (Peace be upon him). It has been beautifully illustrated by noted illustrator, Gurmeet Singh and published by Delhi-based Goodword Books. Khadijah bint Khuwaylid was not only the first Muslim, but also a great supporter of the Prophet’s mission. Her life is a source of great inspiration to believers, especially women. The book has been translated into French, German, Turkish, Malay and Arabic.
