Lawyers attacked in Faizabad

Lucknow: The saffronite lawyers are at it again. A group of about 50 lawyers raising communal slogans attacked the advocates defending the 2007court blast accused in Faizabad court on 21 May. They marched to the chambers of advocates Jamal Ahmad, Mohammad Nadeem and Shakilur Rahman, the defence lawyers in the court premises. They damaged furniture and other articles and beat up the lawyers in which Mohammad Saleem, another defence lawyer in the case, was seriously injured.

Earlier, Advocate Mohammed Shoaib was beaten up by his colleagues in 2008. His fault was that his client Naushad, an alleged HuJI terror suspect, is an accused in the November 2007 Lucknow court blasts. Other lawyers in UP, had also been assaulted in the past for taking up cases of the terror-accused. Some of them have even given up the cases due to these threats. In fact, it is not just the lawyers who have been assaulted; even terror suspects were not spared.

The lawyers, by not allowing a suspect to defend himself in the court of law, are seriously hampering the criminal justice system which clearly believes in the legal maxim that a person is ‘innocent until proven guilty. Their act also violates Article 22 (1) of the Constitution which gives every accused a right to be defended by a lawyer. (Mohammad Shahid)
