No RSS leader questioned: CBI chief

New Delhi: The Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) on 13 July described as “misleading” reports in a section of the media that some members of the Rashtriya Swayamsevak Sangh (RSS) have been questioned by the agency in connection with bomb blast cases. CBI Director Ashwani Kumar said they had not questioned any of the RSS leaders in the bomb blast cases. Talking to reporters at North Block here, the CBI Director said that the reports on the CBI questioning some RSS leaders in connection with the bomb blasts were not correct. “No. Nobody was questioned by the CBI,” he said in response to questions about media reports that CBI had questioned RSS leaders Ashok Varsheny and Ashok Berry in connection with the blasts in Mecca Masjid and Ajmer.

The RSS on the same day said its functionaries will “cooperate” with agencies but termed as “baseless” suggestions that some of its members were involved in the terrorist crimes. “As long as investigations go on in a professional manner and they want cooperation, RSS functionaries are ready to extend cooperation,” Sangh leader Ram Madhav told reporters here. But at the same time he said that if investigations into the blasts took a “political turn and if vendetta becomes the motive, the RSS will have to take stock of the situation”. Madhav termed as “baseless” reports that certain senior RSS functionaries were involved in the terrorist incidents and were being interrogated. “There were certain charges about individuals and the agencies wanted some cooperation from our functionaries. They have extended full cooperation to the agencies,” he said. The Sangh’s response came following reports that two of its senior functionaries were interrogated by the CBI for allegedly sheltering Mecca Masjid blast accused.
