Attack on Yasin Malik by Hindutvites disturbs Kashmir

Ajmer: Kashmir’s separatist leader and chairman of Jammu & Kashmir Liberation Front (JKLF) had come alongwith his wife to Ajmer Dargah to take part in Eid Miladun Nabi function and had been staying in a nearby hotel. When the BJP members came to know about it, they staged a protest demonstration against him in front of the hotel, raised slogans against him, threw stones and bottles, waved black flags and burnt his effigy.

When he came to the hotel balcony to see what was going on, the demonstrators threw shoes and chappals at him and shouted the slogan ‘If you have to live in Bharat, you will have to say Vande Mataram.’ This happened on 11 February. In Srinagar people reacted strongly to BJP activists’ behaviour.

They also took out a protest demonstration against BJP’s behaviour. There was a clash between the demonstrators and police in Srinagar in which at least 5 persons were injured, including two policemen and about 30 demonstrators were arrested.

There was a strike also in Srinagar and many other parts of the state to observe the death anniversary of Muhammad Maqbool Bhat, founder of Jammu & Kashmir Liberation Front (JKLF) who was executed in Delhi’s Tihar Jail on 11 February 1984 and also buried there. The strike had paralysed normal life in Srinagar.

Some members of JKLF repeated their earlier demand of return of Maqbool Bhat’s remains for burial in Kashmir, his home state.
