Dalits bid to enter temple, 700 arrested

Chennai: About 700 Dalits led by a CPM leader who had tried to enter a temple in Athapuram village of Tamil Nadu’s Madurai district on the morning of 31 January were arrested. Police, after assessing the tension and unrest between the Dalits and people of upper castes, had imposed section 144 under which the assembly of four or more than four persons at any spot is prohibited. It may be stated in this connection that permission to Dalits to enter this temple, which is under the control and administration of non-Dalit people, was not being given since long. In 2008 a wall which was earlier built to isolate the people of Dalit families from rest of the village people was demolished on the orders of Tamil Nadu’s Chief Minister M. Karunanidhi.
