Grand Mufti comes down on Western occupation

Saudi Arabia’s top cleric on 15 November condemned Western occupation of foreign lands, during a key sermon to millions of Muslims performing the annual Haj pilgrimage. “Islam forbids the occupation of a country, and the unlawful shedding of civilian blood, and the destruction of crops and cattle,” said the Grand Mufti of Saudi Arabia Sheikh Abdul Aziz Aal Sheikh.

“The rights of people in Third World nations is not as it is in other countries, and it is unacceptable that nations occupy these lands and rape them of their riches,” the mufti told some three million people from around the world. His speech was given in the Namra mosque during stay at Arafat which is an obligatory part of Haj.

“But violence cannot be cured with violence and neither can terrorism be cured with force, but by lifting injustices levied on oppressed peoples,” he told the pilgrims.

The Grand Mufti stressed that Islam is a religion of “great mercy” and that it preached equality. Exhorting the Muslims to face the challenges of the present era with unity. By pursuing the path of faith, he assured, no power on earth could harm the ummah. If Islamic justice is sincerely followed there shall neither be poverty nor unemployment.

Speaking from Masjid Namrah, the historic mosque at the Arafat, the Sheikh assured the haj audience that the Prophet’s (pbuh) Shariah has taken due care of mankind’s spiritual and economical concerns. For pursuing its guidelines man shall be rewarded int the Hereafter. The Shariah fosters love and amity. All men should respect everyone because Islam is not just an ideology but a practical way of a blissful life. The devotees must offer their prayers in a spirit of humility.

He reminded people to remember the rights of the orphans. He declared that spending one’s wealth in acts which are prohibited (haram) is strongly deplorable. He ejnoined on the affluents to have special concern for the deprived ones. If two parties show magnanimity in settling their disputes; Allah’s Bounties rain over them. Nikah has been recommended hence gratifying one’s lust through other means has been strongly prohibited. If the family nucleus is disturbed and we ourselves destroy it then the whole Ummah shall crumbledown.
