SOG picked up Muslim student from Azamgarh

Azamgarh: Once again a young Muslim student was picked up by Special Operation Group (SOG) from Azamgarh and tortured after falsely accusing him of being involved in terrorist activities. According to available news, 23-year-old Abdullah, an engineering student of Gulbarga University was picked up by SOG team from Paharpur muhalla (near Shibli Post-Graduate College of Azamgarh) on 28 February and taken to Police Line. As soon as the news of his arrest spread in the city, a large crowd assembled at his residence and began shouting slogans against police.

Political and social groups like All India Millat Congress also became active and started protesting and shouting slogans against the police. Sensing the seriousness of the situation, Police chief in a statement clarified that the boy has been taken there for questioning and after that he would be released. Meanwhile, protests and slogan shouting continued. After some time the youth was released.

On asking by the people, Abdullah said that in Police Line’s Police station he was unnecessarily abused and strange and irrelevant questions were asked. He was also taunted for keeping a beard. He was accused of indulging in fake passport business whereas he firmly denied that he indulges in such illegal business or ever applied for a Passport. He also said that police personnel were trying to terrorise him. It may well be concluded that people’s vigilance saved him otherwise his fate would have been unknown like many such cases.
