Panel hears arguments in Vizag Waqf land case

Hyderabad: The Andhra Pradesh State Waqf Tribunal (SWT) on 4 March heard the arguments of the counsels representing the Hinduja National Power Corporation Ltd and Akbaruddin Owaisi, MIM floor leader in assembly, and posted the order on the cancellation of its ex parte judgment on the sale of Waqf property to March 21.

P Shiv Kumar, counsel for HNPCL, informed the SWT that the notices said to have been served by it to his client, were addressed to an officer who had left the organization. The address was also wrong. Therefore, he claimed the notices were not served on his client. S Abdul Ghaffar, counsel for MIM Floor Leader Akbaruddin Owaisi, said the HNPCL has concocted a story to get the ex parte order withdrawn. The petition of the corporation was not maintainable, therefore it should be dismissed, he said.

The HNPCL had bought 1122 acre of Hazrath Syed Ali Ishaq Madani Auliya waqf in Visakhapatnam. The Waqf Board collected the agreed upon amount and signed the sale documents. Meanwhile, Owaisi approached the tribunal seeking cancellation of the deal. Though the Waqf Board was also served notice, it failed to respond. Since the purchaser and the Waqf Board did not appear, the tribunal had declared the sale null and void.
