BJP MLA convicted in Kandhamal riots surrenders

Manoj Kumar, BJP legislator from Kandhamal who was convicted in two riot cases surrendered on 9 March before a fast track riot court after Supreme Court set aside the bail granted to him by the Orissa High court. A fast track court in Kandhamal last year in the month of June had sentenced Manoj Kumar to seven years rigorous imprisonment for his role in the murder of a Christian Dalit during the 2008 communal violence in the area. Manoj has been remanded in judicial custody. His lawyer Ajit Patnaik is likely to move again for bail in the High Court. Altogether 14 riots related cases were registered against the MLA of which he had been exonerated in 11 cases.
