Trinamool & Left likely to give more tickets to Muslims

In a bid to woo Muslims because of their sizeable presence in the state the Left and the Trinamool Congress are likely to field a large number of Muslim candidates in the forthcoming assembly elections. In the last couple of months, both these parties have announced political sops to woo Muslims in the state. Muslims in the entire state constitute nearly 27 percent and any swing of mood can possibly turn the tide for any of these parties.

Left party after having experienced the alienation of Muslims in the last Lok Sabha polls and its aftermath on its polity is showering its generosity on the Muslims of the state. This measure includes 250 acres of land free for the Aligarh Muslim University campus at Murshidabad and reservation to the Muslims in government jobs. Trinamool on the other hand has offered concessional passes for the madrasa students and has also granted them permission to take up railway recruitment exams in Urdu language. Trinamool chief Mamta Banerjee in order to attract Muslim voters is now using terms that are often used by the Muslims like Inshaallah and Khuda Haafiz during her rallies in the state.

It is generally believed that the Sachar Committee report on the plight of the Muslims in the state has dented the CPI (M)’s minority vote bank. Mohammad Salim, CPI (M) central committee member said that the representation of Muslims in panchayat and local bodies is low in other states as compared to West Bengal.
