n the article "Taj Mahal: Unnecessary controversy" (MG, 16-30 April, 2005) it is reported that a BJP MLA dubbed the Taj Mahal as Tejo Mahalya temple dedicated to Lord Shiva and demanded a commission, headed by a Supreme Court judge, to go into the historical details of the monument, relying on a book written by PN Oak. Such hate mongers and separatists should be reminded the Supreme Court judgement on the subject. ‘Somebody has a bee in his bonnet, hence this petition, said Hon’ble Justice S.P. Bharucha and Ruma Pal of supreme Court, in July 2000, dismissing a PIL by a historian who sought to rewrite the history of Taj Mahal. The message is short and very clear : Don’t mess with history. Preserve it. So that the past does not become a victim of the prejudices of the present.
Years ago, Professor RC Majumdar had described similar attack on Taj Mahal as idiotic. PN Oak school of “historians” have been thriving on the average Hindu’s ignorance of history and archeology, juggling with words, so that by a mere stroke of pen Taj Mahal becomes Tejo Mahalya, Lal Qila becomes Lal Kot, Rome Ramanager, the Vatican Vedavatika, the Pope Papahah, the Sang-e-Aswad, Shivalinga and so on, till every name loses its locale in space and time and it becomes a free for all. There are enough historical evidence available which declares Taj Mahal a Muslim monument without any doubt and by no stretch of facts or imagination a Hindu temple.
