Council of Indian Muslims (UK) appalled on starvation deaths in Murshidabad
18 April, 2005
HE Buddhadeb Bhattacharjee
Chief Minister
Government of West Bengal
Kolkata
India
Dear Chief Minister,
The Council of Indian Muslims has been appalled to see pictures of and read reports about famine like conditions in the Murshidabad district of West Bengal where thousands of families are facing death by starvation.
It seems highly diabolical and strange that a communist government like yours which prides itself as being a caring and minority-friendly, is not doing enough to redress the situation. In some quarters it is being alleged that your government for reasons known to yourself, is sidelining the issue and neglecting the poor people who need immediate help.
We are at a loss to understand the reported harassment by government agencies of journalists who dared highlight the wretched condition in the district.
Indeed it is a matter of great worry for us all to see that in this twenty first century, an age of fast communication, when help can be reached in matters of hours, there are people in the largest democracy of the world who are facing death by starvation and no help is coming to them!
The Council of Indian Muslims urges you to immediately take measures to alleviate the sufferings and miseries of the inhabitants of the historic district of
Murshidabad.
Sincerely yours
M. Munaf Zeena
