Rejoinders / Letters to the Editor

Baba Ram Dev and the clueless Prime Minister   On the 1st of June 2011, the nation was aghast to watch Ministers of the Manmohan Singh administration grovel before Baba Ramdev making a total mockery of Indian democracy. Who is this Baba who wants the economist Prime minister to snap a finger and bring to about absurd economic reforms? Why weren’t all these Prime Minister’s men able to neutralize this man unless his acumen on economic affairs is comparable to that of our Prime Minister? If the Prime minister wanted him not to start his hunger strike, why wasn’t a pipeline opened to him in the days prior to Baba’s descent on Delhi. After all Baba has not descended on Delhi like a tsunami. He has been beating his drums about his intentions long before the flight to the capital. Could not the PM and his ministers have a dialogue with him by deputing government officials to explain to him what Kapil Sibal is bending backwards to do today. A storm has gathered over Ram Lila maidan which the PM had been unable to prevent and is incapable of handling. We are holding breaths anticipating a law and order situation of a frightful proportion. Is Lal Krishna Advani being vindicated? Is the PM giving an account of himself as a clueless and weak prime minister? Dr Mookhi Amir Ali, Mumbai 400054     II   It is highly objectionable that a religious and spiritual man like Yoga Guru Swami Ramdev was arrested and manhandled and apprehended disrespectfully. The action of the government will tantamount favouring the black money holders. And it will be thought that the government has done this action on the behest of the black business persons. Anyway now it is testing time for the government. How early the government machinery comes with a proposal to bring back the money which has been credited in Swiss banks. People want to know what action the government will take against the defaulter’s. In case the government does not initiate any action it will be viewed seriously and the UPA11 will face defeat in the coming election Dr A H Maqdoomi, Gulbarga     III   Though Baba Ramdev shall be admired for launching a struggle against corruption, his flamboyant style of using a Jet plane and a 5-star hotel to negotiate with the government, the fund-raising drive by his aide and his sharing of the dais with a known communal bigot had made him a suspect in the eyes of the common man. And then, when the Delhi police swooped in the midnight at Ram Lila grounds, his jumping down from the stage, covering himself in a woman’s apparel have reduced his stature as an asinine fighter. That said, the UPA government should be denounced for its weak-kneed conduct of treating Ramdev like a war hero in the beginning and later calling him a ‘thug’.   Syed Sultan Mohiddin, Kadapa (A.P)     IV   The UPA Govt. of India deserves to be congratulated for taking drastic action against Baba Ramdev since extreme remedies are most appropriate for extreme diseases. SM Pasha, Chennai     V   Nobody can deny importance for effective check on black money in and inside the country. But the way Baba Ramdev handled the issue, has tend to cause harm to anti-corruption movement. Firstly, Baba Ramdev tried to avoid his appearance in public-rallies organised by India-Against-Corruption led by Anna Hazare and others. For instance instead of joining anti-corruption march from Ramlila Grounds to Jantar Mantar (New Delhi) on 30th January 2011, he preferred his own glorification by holding similar rally on 27th February 2011. Instead of waiting for outcome of 30th June 2011 deadline of Lokpal Bill being drafted, he announced his fast from 4th June 2011 giving an undesired impression of split in anti-corruption movement. Anna Hazare always took some legal minds to talk with government-representatives. But Baba Ramdev was trapped to go alone to talk with Union Ministers at Hotel Claridges (New Delhi) by a tricky glorification through red-carpet welcome by four senior Union ministers and Union Cabinet Secretary where he cut off his own hands by handing over letter of agreement to Union ministers. He ran away dressed as a woman leaving his innocent followers being beaten up by Delhi Police. Civil society rightly turned down to be associated with him on his unlawful announcement of creating armed group. Now finally he could not withstand his fast-till-death even for five days when he boasted that he could live on fast at least 45 days if his demands were not met! Subhash Chandra Agarwal, Delhi-6       Anti-corruption law   The National Commission to Review the Working of the Constitution. Headed by former Chief Justice M N Venkatachaliah, with Justice Shri B P Jeevan Reddy, Justice R S Sarkaria and former Attorney General Soli J. Sorabjee as members set up by the NDA government and the second Reforms Commission of 2007, recommended that the Prime Minister must be kept out of the jurisdiction of the Lokpal. The Prime Minister occupies a unique position.. his image, his reputation and his personality that pervades the entire government. Because of his very position and the power he wields, he attracts a good amount of opposition, criticism, allegations and what not. If a Lokpal were to take up each and every allegation or accusation made against the Prime Minister by a political party or a group or a person, it would hobble the Prime Minister in an effective discharge of his functions. He cannot afford to remain under a cloud all the time nor can the nation afford a Prime Minister under a cloud all the time, his is an as clear a recommendation to keep the prime minister out of the purview of the Lokpal as can be. Anna Hazare?team is hell bent on having the PM in the jurisdiction of the Lokpal. Dr Mookhi Amir Ali, Mumbai 400054     Sushma dancing episode   Both the rivals have neglected the basic question whether dancing of women is right or wrong. What is the divine guidance in this regard? What I believe there are no specific directions in the holy books of Hinduism. Therefore no party is in a position to refer and quote the orders from Geeta or any other book. The followers are free to do as per their wish and will  Islam has given perfect guidance in this regard. The Holy Quran has clearly instructed to all Muslim women to use the veil or Purda. They are not allowed to come in public with out Burqa. Dancing of ladies is also prohibited ,Dancing makes the women downgraded. The ladies dance before the aliens to arouse the sexual feelings it has become a profession such dancers take money for this purpose. A modest lady who is from a respectable family never makes such mistake. Only those ladies or girls dance in the films or TV screen as a tread they also become sex worker to earn the livelihood. But no father, brother, son or husband will like this profession. If you ask the Husband of Sushma he will categorically object. If her husband had present there she could not dare to dance She all the time invest her time with five big leaders Advani, Arun Jaitly,Nitin Gadkari Murali Manoher Joshi and Raj nath Singh and behaves like. What is there in Dancing? Any way she has set up a bad example .Even the moment was not of joy or merry making. Dr MaqdoomiGulbarga     Uma back in BJP, yet again
Sadhvi Uma Bharti has returned to BJP. She has declared that she is interested in Rama Rajya! Every one knows how, beautiful wife full of character was kicked out of the palace and sent to the jungle during her pregnancy when Rama was the king of Ayodhya. Sita a spiritual lady suffered insults because of the remarks of uneducated washer man. The washer man was not taught a lesson and the queen was sent to jungle to give birth to two sons. Why did king Rama take charge of his sons when he believed that his wife was unfaithful? At last Sita died. King Rama taught his followers to throw women in fire. Today Hindu people burn their women alive for dowry and they never repent. We do not want Rama Rajya. Nazneen O.Saherwala, Surat   II   Uma Bharati’s entrance in BJP does not seen perfect, it looks as if she has joined half heartedly and the leaders also did not give her warm welcome. Immediately after joining the party she was deputed to Uttar Pradesh to strengthen the party. The king pin Mr. LK Advani was not present at the meeting or helm of affair, After leaving the party Miss Bharati could not revised or refined her ideology rather she stick to the old dilapidated and rusted ideology which has lost credibility in the public, and line of action. In view of the above circumstances the assignment allotted to Miss Bharati will not be successful or she can discontinue her mission in the middle and will go in the dark of the political arena Instead it was better for her to join the Ram Dev movement there are good chances of his progress, Miss Bharati could become his political adviser. Baba in future may form one political party to gain power and play an effective role in bringing back the black money from foreign banks Dr AH MaqdoomiGulbarga     Advertising to children   The NGO Save the Children has launched a global advertising campaign. A selected advertising agency was entrusted with the campaign to disseminate the International Day of African Child, which will mark the 16th of June. Moreover, it works the macabre death watch child: every minute 19 children die under five years, every hour, 1,140, each day, 27,360, each year nearly 10 million. Of those 10 million, 99 percent are in developing countries. The said NGO says it is feasible to reduce by 60percent of this figure mortal with simple measures and no faces, such as vaccines, oral dehydration, mosquito nets and access to health care. Because these children are themselves victims of typical disorders of newborns: pneumonia and diarrhoea. Using these simple measures, would save more than 6 of the 10 million who die young, with easily curable. From the point of view of the mother, it means that 9 out of 10 mothers in sub-Saharan Africa, one of the areas with the highest infant mortality in the world, lost a son during their reproductive life. Besides this region, the rest of Africa and southern Asia are the two main areas where children are more vulnerable to disease and malnutrition. The map is limited to only 10 countries, including China and India which are the two economic giants. China and India boast growth rates that could have an advantage, in this sense, over western countries in the coming decades. Clement Ferrer, Madrid, Spain     Lesson from Fukushima nuclear disaster   It is really heart-warming that at least one nation has drawn a lesson from the Fukushima nuclear disaster. Chancellor Angela Merkel’s decision to shut down all nuclear power stations in Germany by the year 2022 is praiseworthy. Shouldn’t Dr. Manmohan Singh also see the writing on the wall–that when a nuclear power plant goes awry, it becomes a potential weapon of mass destruction? Aren’t we living in fool’s paradise that we possess state-of-the-art technology which will never allow a nuclear accident to happen? Is it not the time we started scientific explorations for safe alternative energy sources?     Syed Sultan Mohiddin, Kadapa, AP   FDI in retail trade   The CPI (M) is right in opposing the latest move by the government to allow FDI in multi-brand retail trade. With over 4 crore people depending on it, retail trade in India is second only to agriculture in providing employment opportunities. The global retail giants like Wal Mart and Carrefour would push a vast majority of people to loose their livelihood. Apart from this, the farmers might be tempted to cultivate cash crops which would further escalate the prices of food grains and essential commodities. Chief Economic adviser Kaushik Basu’s calling the retail trade in India as “primitive” is illogical and his suggestion of allowing FDI in multi-brand retail as a measure to contain inflation is a wrong prescription. Syed Sultan Mohiddin,Kadapa (A.P)     Media ethics   I have complained to the Union information & broadcast ministry against MTV Roadies programme in which two contestants of Haryana and Punjab stood fully naked on the stage in front of Brazilian audience on direction of Raghu producer and director of the programme. I received a reply from New Delhi that we have forwarded your complaint to the concern person and if action is not taken within two months you can follow up with authorities. Raghu is a shameless person promoting his ideas on national television without thinking that children and families are watching these programmes. Irfan Machiwala, Mahim Mumbai     World Environment Day   Come 5th June, and you have World Environment Day, which is an annual event that is aimed at being the biggest and most widely celebrated global day for positive environmental action. WED activities take place all year round but climax on June 5 every year, involving people from all walks of life who take action to ensure a cleaner, greener and brighter outlook for themselves and future generations. Though we also tend to be its part, however, our action doesn’t really resemble to the agenda set to be an environment friendly. Though it sound traditional, but still, one must gear up again and try these following steps to propagate the message of Going Green: Pick up a few pieces of trash and remember to recycle what you can leave the cars and vehicles at home for a day. Reduce your CO2 emissions; plan your trips in advance and walk, bike or use public transportation. Plant a native or climate adapted tree-a tree will consume CO2 and produce oxygen, and adapted species will not require much irrigation once established. Drink water instead of coffee-it takes an average of 35 gallons of water to produce one cup of coffee. Make your home more energy efficient and consider on-site generation-ask Green Build Energy Group about wind and solar Mohd. Ziyaullah Khan, Nagpur -440013       Translate it into actions, Mr Obama   According to Brzezinski, in 1979 in an effort to draw the Russians, the US planned the Afghan trap he has openly stated this in writing. The world knew nothing about the American trap then. I am positive Israel has started planning a similar trap to create manipulated pretexts to completely defeat Obama’s excellent ideas, encouraged and emboldened by his 100 percent certainty of winning the Presidency second time. But I am sure Obamas plan is not going to be executed over the next decade or so unless the USA makes daring economic moves to reduce its aid to Israel. Will the American Zionist lobby allow that? They will rather defeat Obama in 2012 or make him quit We hope Obama is sincere but what is important is not just words, please show some actions Mr President, prepare to stop funding Israel if the Zionists are stubborn in agreeing to your ideas. Unless and until the Palestinian problem is peacefully and equitably settled, the war on terror can go on and the so called infinite justice will turn out to be infinite bloodshed and misery to the poor and innocent throughout the world. Justice is now on the side of Palestinians. Kodimirpal(via email)     NATO strike on Libya   Everyone is astonished to see the double standard of US and its NATO allies in Libya. No one can accept  claims of US and British high authorities that NATO air strikes are providing  help to ordinarily Libyans people.  Most of observers believe that war of Libya is fighting to just control huge natural resources of country. True realty is that continues air strikes, use of cluster bombs against civilian targets provide nothing except deaths, destruction and hate. It seems true that after Iraq and Libya, the western coalition under leadership of United States will go to Algeria, because apart from its huge energy resources, the country has cash reserves of around 150 billion Euros. This is the main reason that why NATO alliance is bombing Libya. The countries they joined Libyan mission they have one thing in common they are all practically bankrupt. The USA alone, has a staggering debt of $US14,000 billion, France, Great Britain and Italy each have a US$2,000 billion public deficit compared to less than US$400 billion in public debt for 46 African countries combined. At the time when humanity is dying in poor countries of Asia and Africa and people are dying in DRC Congo and Sudanese poor villages instead of providing them any relief Now several key personalities from UK and United States have visited the rebels strong hold of Ben Ghazi they are also providing sophisticated weapons and surveillance system to rebel forces against forces of  Qaddafi regime to enhance their agenda on Libyan soil. Khawaza Umer Farooq, Jeddah     Arab world in process of transition   Peaceful demonstrators are taking up arms to fight their own army in Syria. Alawi militiamen have been killing and torturing those resisting the regime’s rule. In 1980, Bashar Assad’s father, Hafez Assad, faced an armed uprising in the central city of Hama, which was put down by the Special Forces of Hafez’s brother Rifaat who is currently living, for the benefit of war crimes investigators, in central London at cost of up to 20,000 lives. There may be moves by Rifaat Assad and Company seeking help from his hosts manipulating towards regime change under the peudo-banner of mocracy promotion? as was done by the Iraqi dissident Chalabi and gang in the case of Iraq) Syria. Should that happen it will be a huge tragedy and a big loss to all the sacrifices that the common Syrian folks made? Who wants the tragedy of Iraq re-enacted? Syrians arriving in Beirut tell that the people of Syria are tired of following the example of peaceful Tunisian and Egyptian protesters Al-Qaida has zero roles to play here. The few al-Qa’ida cells in the Arab world may wish they can do, but the Arab revolt is about the one phenomenon in the Middle East uncontaminated by religious radicalism. Mohamedameen(via email)   Running with the hare and hunting with the hounds   It is unconvincing why Israel and Obama repeat the familiar reasons for rejecting Hamas. They say to be a genuine party to peace; the Quartet has made it clear that Hamas must meet three conditions: 1) Recognize Israel’s right to exist 2) Renounce violence 3) Abide by past agreements the strange but inconvenient fact is that the United States and Israel firmly reject all these three above conditions. They outright have been rejecting Palestinian national rights for the past 60 years or so. Both Israel and the US are more involved in more violence than Hamas proportionally) Both Israel and the US reject the Quartet’s central proposal, the Roadmap. Israel formally accepted it with 14 reservations. Imagine if Palestinian authority accepted it with about 10 reservations. Israeli reservations effectively eliminated the contents of the Road Map( the US tacitly backed Israeli position) Do readers know who brought these facts to public attention for the first time. It was President Carter’s book: Palestine: Peace Not Apartheid. In spite of all these Israel has manufactured the world consent by its propaganda that Hamas is a terrorist organisation and so Israel can not negotiate with Hamas. This is utterly false and dishonest. The fact is that it is not true that Hamas is not a genuine party to peace but it is a fact that Israel dodges negotiations on some excuse or other.
