Islamic Perspectives

This is how we welcomed this years' holy month of ramadan

Syed Nabeel shares with us how on the onset of Ramadan he and his friends hit two birds with one "arrow of charity".

After the day's work, every night, a few friends from my neighbourhood hang around a park nearby. With our bellies full after dinner, we businessmen, scientists, engineers,  doctors, artists, general exchange ideas. Just four days back, with the Islamic holy month of Ramadan arriving soon, a "trajectory of idea" hit upon us late night.

What we decided was to find out the poorest-of-the-poor families (widows/orphan siblings/elderly) who would have to work hard for their pre-dawn meal and the post-sunset meal (while fasting in the month of Ramadan). We located a few families. We decided to sponsor provision for one month, as 25kg rice, 10kg wheat, sugar, cooking oil which all added upto about Rs 1750.

Although we expected it to be 4-5 neighbours and friends sponsoring, it turned out to be a huge contribution from almost many people who came to know this. Some even sponsored 6 families.

And we did not source all this the big-bazaars or departmental stores or from distributors. We brought it from a small petty shop for whom a single day business must be running in hundreds. A business of thousands was a dream come true for the shop owner. Hence the second bird was "hit".

It was very touching as we distributed it this morning. Some people  were with tears rest were with prayers.

Truly, the real "receiving" is in giving. God bless the entire team of people who sponsored this charity.

I suppose if every reader of this does something like this in their own communities, it will spread a lot of positivity among people.

I wish everyone a blessed month of Ramadan and pray to Almighty that peace and prosperity prevails around the globe. Ameen!

[Quran says in verse 2:265 "But those who spend their wealth in order to gain God’s approval, and as an affirmation of their own faith, are like a garden on a hill: heavy rain falls and it produces double its normal yield; even if no heavy rain falls, it will still be watered by the dew. God sees all that you do."

Any good deed done with the intention to please Almighty will be rewarded by Allah as he is quick in settling accounts (2:202). This ramadan do not stop your Charity at 2.5% (Zakat) but go beyond it. The 2.5% is mandatory but above that will be voluntarily and worthy of lots of reward, insha Allah.

Quran says in verse 4:40 “He does not wrong anyone by as much as the weight of a speck of dust: He doubles any good deed and gives a tremendous reward of His own.”]
