Kristallnacht of the fascists in Dhaka

An Open Letter to diehard secularists who were chastising us for opposing the fascist government of Hasina Wajed

Dear Mr Javed Anand,
What do you say about this kristallnacht? Are these fascists worthy of your support? Should they themselves not be tried?
I hope you are aware:
- The true nature of the compromised International Crimes Tribunal [what a misnomer and does B'desh have authority to constitute an international tribunal] was exposed by the London Economist and the chief judge had to resign;
- That Jamaat Islami Bangladesh (JIB) was never an accused in the 1971 events
- That JIB was an ally in the past of Hasina Wajed's party
- That many persons now being accused were never members of JIB in 1971
- That after the first trials in 1973, Shaikh Mujib had announced a general amnesty
- That none of the accused now appeared on the list of the accused in 1973
- That respectable organisations like Human Rights Watch and Amnesty have cast aspersions on the integrity of the Bangladesh govt and the tribunal and have considered the trial as an ill-omen for the country's future.... Mr Anand, it is judicial murder to get rid of a political party which is an ally of the main opposition in Bangladesh.

PS: This mail was sent on 8 May to Mr Javed Anand and a number of other friends who were publicly chastising us in their writings, yahoogroups and openly shared emails... till date we have not received any response from them.

Kristallnacht, German for the Night of Broken Glass, was the start of a series of coordinated attacks against Jews throughout Nazi Germany and parts of Austria on 9–10 November 1938. It was carried out by the Nazi paramilitary and civilians. It is was used by Hitler to take over total control of the German State and lead it to the eventual destruction we all know. The fascist regime of Haseena Wajed tried the same in the night of 5-6 May by unleashing her police, army and militias on unsuspecting protesters who were fast asleep late in the night. Hasina Wajed’s aim is to take over the State and decimate all opposition. We are confident that 2013 is not 1938 and that the in the age of global communication and Internet, the freedom-loving Bengalis will not allow the fascists to succeed.

An estimated 3000+ Muslim scholars and devotees were killed though the regime and its lackies are speaking of smaller numbers. Thousands injured, hospitalized in critical conditions and thousands arrested. The night of the attack was completely blackened out to comfortably commit genocide. Media has clamped to hide genocide and two pro-Opposition news channels have been silenced.

It is rare in the history of human civilization that a Muslim country’s ruling government can be such fascist, ruthless and brutal to unleash a barbaric systematic killing spree of such scale against the nation’s peaceful, unarmed and Islam-loving most revered scholars (ulama) of high repute and the devotee mass Muslims that took place in the deep black night following May 5, 2013 in Bangladesh’s capital city of Dhaka that is well known as the city of masjids (mosques).

It is also unprecedented in the history of human civilization to observe serious insult to Allah, the Prophet (PBUH), his respected wives, Islam and different forms of Islamic ‘ibadah (worship)  like prayer, fasting etc. in such shameful vulgar language used by some Bangladeshi atheist bloggers and political activists belonging to the ruling Awami League party that the world has never experienced before.

This has been possible for the atheist bloggers only once their political patronize and master the ultra-secular fundamentalist government has removed “absolute trust and faith in the Almighty Allah” from the constitution of the country as one of the constitution’s fundamental principles. The blasphemy of these Bangladeshi atheist bloggers has surpassed all their predecessor masters including Salman Rushdie and Taslima Nasrin. Unfortunately, the world community has paid no or little attention to these heinous crimes perhaps because this blasphemy is perpetrated in Bangla language. Such nasty blasphemy can infuriate any human being of good reason and sense let alone Muslims.

This heinous crime inevitably shook the conscience of Bangladesh’s peaceful Islam-loving masses and the devoted Islamic scholars who demanded the government of this Muslim nation to take stern action against the culprits. However, instead of conceding to the demands of the most revered scholars of the country and the devotee Muslims, the government patronized the atheists bloggers to run the so-called “Shahbag Square Movement” months after months under full police protection while this movement demanded death sentence of all so-called accused war criminals, banning Islamic political parties and clamping down on all Islamic businesses including Islamic Bank Bangladesh Limited which is the country’s topmost bank, institutions including schools and universities of Islamic education and Islam-leaning media including the daily Amar Desh, daily Naya Diganta, Diganta TV and Islamic TV.

The bloggers have submitted a list of demands to the national parliament. The Prime Minister standing in the parliament has welcomed them, expressed her full solidarity with them and promised to implement each and every demand they have made no matter how unjust, undemocratic, unlawful and gross violation of human rights those demands are.

Devoted Muslims and ulama brought out peaceful countrywide demonstrations which the government tried to crush using terrorist armed partymen and law-enforcing agencies with clear instructions by different ministers including the Home Minister and top police authority to open fire as soon as the protesters are seen on the streets. This has claimed hundreds of life while thousands are seriously injured, thousands arrested and being tortured in the name of remand.

On the other hand, the government has started implementing the demands of the atheists bloggers as per the promise of the Prime Minister in Parliament. While most media belongs to pro-government opportunist persons and agencies who fully support the bloggers’ movement and fully cover their news, the few Islam leaning media are under government embargo as per the demands of the bloggers. Yielding to the bloggers’ demand the government has recently arrested one of the country’s most popular journalists and editor of the daily Amar Desh, Mahmudur Rahman, who is ever vocal against the mountainous corruption and misrule of the government. The government sealed the offices of the daily as well. Mahmudur Rahman’s life is now at risk due to all types of torture on him while in custody.

The government’s anti-democratic, anti-human rights and anti-Islamic stance has shaken the sentiments of the nation. Peace-loving Islamic scholars and devoted Muslims who were never associated with any politics formed a non-political movement called “Hefazat-e-Islam” or “Protecting Islam” (“Hefazat”) to protect the sanctity of Islam and to secure Muslims’ right to practice religion in their own country. Hefazat, led by country’s most revered Islamic scholar Allama Ahmad Shafi, advanced 13 points demand to the government to implement in order to diffuse the tension before eruption of the nation’s sentiment. However, the government has taken a path of bloodbath leading to an imminent civil war. Hefazat gave the government a deadline of one month to implement these demands. Government categorically refused to accept any single demand. At the same time the government has employed all its agencies, the atheist bloggers and its political alliances consisting of different factions of communist movement to launch hate-campaign and attack against Hefazat movement.

As the government didn’t pay attention to any demand, Hefazat declared a peaceful Dhaka Oborodh (Dhaka Blockade) for May 5, 2013. All renowned ulama and some six million devoted Muslims from all over the country were expected to attend the Oborodh. However, the government adopted a repressive policy. Hefazat activists were prevented at all entry points to come to Dhaka. Clashes between police and armed cadres of the ruling party on one side and the peace-loving unarmed devoted Hefazat activists on the other, erupted and continued whole day at all entry points to Dhaka and within Dhaka city itself.

During their peaceful march towards Shapla Chattar, all parts of the capital, including Purana Paltan, Baitul Mukarram, Bijoy Nagar, Dainik Bangla intersection, Bangabandhu Avenue and Motijheel turned into a battleground as the violent armed cadres of the ruling party attacked and the police opened fired at Hefazat activists to prevent their march that claimed many innocent lives and left thousands seriously injured. Still estimated four million people gathered at the capital’s Shapla Chattar (Water Lilly Square) from different parts of the city.

While the Oborodh of the four million people were going on peacefully in the late afternoon, media were not allowed to broadcast it live. Killing spree continued on different streets leading to the Shapla Chattar. Hefazat chief Allama Shafi was not allowed to join the Oborodh. Hefazat activists vowed to remain on the spot until their leader arrived. On the other hand, the ruling party called a press conference in which the party Secretary General warned the Hefazat activists in a fascist tone to leave the place peacefully by 6 pm or else face the government action, adding that “they were allowed this time in Dhaka but next time they would not be even allowed to come out of their homes”.

What followed afterwards cannot be thought of any civilized nation of the democratic world. Electricity was disconnected all around the vicinity of the Shapla Chattar for a complete blackout night scenario. Thousands of heavily equipped law-enforcing agencies including police, Border Guard Bangladesh (BGB) and Rapid Action Battalion (RAB) were deployed. No Hefazat activists were allowed out and no media were allowed in. Initially the forces continued firing bullets, rubber bullets, tear shells and sound grenades intermittently to frighten millions of Hefazat activists at the Shapla Chattar while openening fire on the streets outside the Shapla Chattar. This continued until death toll rose, all hospitals of the capital received injured persons beyond their capacity and all public on the streets was chased out.

Appalling  Genocide: At 2:30 AM joint forces led by Police, RAB and BGB armed with heavy artillery and mortar carried out mass killing in the whole area of Shapla Chattar that was already blacked out with no media access and this continued till dawn. During the day time millions of people gathered at the Shapla Chattar and they stayed back. This mass killing took place in the dark while most people were sleeping. The death count keeps rising. The word is as least 3000 people were killed, thousands were injured.

Media Shut Down: In order to smoothen the process, government forcefully stopped the transmission of two anti-government TV channels, Diganta TV, and Islamic TV and confiscated documentaries collected earlier along with their transmission equipment. Dhaka (6 May 2013): In a press statement, 15 high-ranking leaders of the city unit of the Chittagong-based pro-Islamic organization Hefazate Islam condemned late last night’s attack on the protesters while they were sleeping and said it would be treated as the greatest massacre in  history. They claimed that armed cadres of Chhatra League and Juba League,  the student and youth wings of the ruling Awami League, were involved in  the mayhem at the adjacent areas of Baitul Mukarram National Mosque on Sunday.

“The Hefazat proved it repeatedly that they believed in  peace and not in vandalising and setting fire to public or private  property,” the statement said. “They (ruling partymen) plundered  jewelry shops, set fire to bookshops and holy Quran, damaged and  torched vehicles with police assistance…But the pro-government media is trying to shift the responsibility on us,” the statement added.

The Hefazat  leaders said the pre-dawn crackdown on the crowd was carried out when Hefazat leaders and activists were staying there peacefully; some  were  offering zikr, some prayer and some were just sleeping. “At this time, police, RAB and BGB launched their joint operation killing hundreds of people and injuring some 20,000 more creating a black chapter of the  history,” the statement added. The statement quoted witnesses as saying that bodies of the deceased were taken away by pickup vans, ambulances and trucks. “We have no language to express our condemnation and protest at the  incident,” the statement said adding that the government has to take the responsibility for it.

Terming the incident “savage and shameful”,  Hefazat leaders saidm expressing their concerns over the alleged police attacks on and killings at Qaumi madrasahs and Islamic institutions across the country. They urged the people to offer special prayers in mosques across the country for the departed souls and also for the early recovery of the injured.

The signatories to the statement included Maulana Noor Hossain Kashemi,  Maulana Abdul Latif Nezami, Maulana Jonayed Al Habib, Maulana Abdur Rab  Yusufi, Mufti Taiyab, Maulana Abul Hasnat Amini and Maulana Ahlullah  Wasel.
