Dr J. SADAQATULLAH has been appointed Reserve Bank of India's Regional Director of Tamil Nadu and Puducherry. In addition to Regional Director he will also be ex-officio Secretary of RBI's Local Board. States of Kerala, Karnataka and Andhra Pradesh come under the jurisdiction of this Board. Dr Sadaqatullah has taken over this new post on 30 April. M. AFZAL, well-known Urdu journalist, former India's ambassador to many countries, former M P Rajya Sabha who is presently Chairman of All India Urdu Editors Conference and Shakeel Ahmad, a former union minister have been appointed along with some others, new spokespersons of Congress party. Rashid Alvi, who was till recently a spokesman of the party has been removed from this position. MAULANA ATAUR RAHMAN WAJDI, former Ameer of Jamaat-e Islami and MAULANA SYED MUHAMMAD SHAHIDUL HASANI, Trustee of Jamia Mazahirul Uloom have been appointed members of All India Muslim Personal Law Board. Maulana Ataur Rahman Wajdi's appointment as member of AIMPLB is for 3 years. SHAKEEL AHMAD of Jaipur and a former student of Mumbai's St Xavier's School is among the seven students selected from India for New York's Leadership Programme. He has achieved distinction by generating electricity equal to a 55 watt bulb from one litre of water. While in Mumbai, with this project / invention he had lighted 500 jhuggis and soon with his invention electricity will be brought in Rajasthan's 1200 villages where there is no electricity. Rajasthan government will meet all his expenses of his trip to New York. In addition to all this he has got the Qur'an written in Braille Script for blind persons. He claims that any religious book can be read with this project invented by him. He is 21 at present. Dr JAMSHED SIDDIQI, a teacher in AMU's Computer Science Department has been appointed new Proctor of AMU in place of Prof Khurshid Ahmad Khan who has resigned. MAULANA QARI ABUL HASAN AZMI, former President of Darul Uloom Deoband's Deparatment of Qira't has been selected among 10 renowned Qaris of India by Bahrain government to represent India in the 4-day Talimul Qur'an World Conference held in that country. Qari Abul Hasan, who is also author of about 102 books already left India to participate in this Conference which was held from 27 to 30 April. IYMON MAJEED of Sopore (J&K) village who is a student of MA (Political Science) in Jamia Millia Islamia, New Delhi was selected (among 50 candidates) for the first Irom Sharmila Scholarship which carries a cash prize of Rs 50,000. The Scholarship Award was instituted by (Ms) Nandini Sunder who is a professor of Sociology in Delhi University. This annual Scholarship Award is based on financial needs of a student, academic performance, suffering under AFSPA 1958 and peaceful struggle or campaign against this draconian Act. It may be stated that Irom Sharmila has been on a hunger strike for the past about 12 years for abolition of this Act which is in force in J&K and north-eastern states. Dr RAZIUDDIN, a lecturer of Zoology in Vinoba Bhave University, Jharkhand has been appointed Pro-Vice Chancellor of Ranchi University. MEHREEN FAROOQI has become the first Muslim woman M P of Australian Parliament. Born in Pakistan, her family shifted to Australia in 1992. She is a professor of environmental engineering in New South Wales University, Sydney. There are about 4, 75,000 Muslims in Australia who are mostly from Pakistan, Turkey, Indonesia, Lebanon etc and form about 2 percent of Australia's total population. She will be sworn in as MP in July.
