Riots dont even spare widows

mg403-hasina-widow

This is Hasina, 70, a widow, of Peda village near Bijnor in Uttar Pradesh who saw her two sons and a grandson shot dead in targeted communal violence by her neighbours on 16 September 2016. Five of the 25 or so named in the murders "surrendered" to the local police at the head of a long procession organised by the western Uttar Pradesh BJP activists. But most others are absconding. And meanwhile half a dozen young members of Hasina's family lie with surgical tubes still protruding from their abdomens or bullets still lodged in their neck and limbs. Two tired Constable keep a sporadic vigil. The families remain tense as come night darkness engulfs their compound which has no electricity. The miracle is that Peda did not trigger a massacre such as in Muzaffarnagar three years ago, in the run-up to the General elections, and Mr. Narendra Modi's sweeping victory, specially in Uttar Pradesh. The state goes to the polls in 2017.  (Picture and text courtesy: Dr John Dayal)
